Tick season is upon us once again!
Ticks pose a threat to our furry companions but also to us. Ticks can carry disease and pass those diseases along to us and our furry friends when they bite us. Specific ticks are known to carry specific diseases with the most commonly known one being lyme disease.
In Canada ticks can transmit:
- Lyme Disease
- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
- Ehrlichiosis
- Rickettsia
Ticks are active anytime the temperature is above 4C which means on warm winter days they can be active as well. Last year the only month cold enough for no ticks was January 2023.
Ticks can be found in many areas across Canada and the US but they prefer to live in wooded areas, in tall grasses and under leaf litter. They can also be found in urban areas, like city parks and green spaces.
Speak with your veterinarian about tick protection this year.
